Money Trail Tracked in VA Governor’s Race

LEBANON, Va. - The tab for the Virginia governor's race is more than $19.6 million -- and a look at the campaign donation "money trail" shows most of the cash is coming from Political Action Committees (PACs). The second-largest donor category this election season is a group that, until recent years, had not been big players in terms of donations: labor unions.

Loretta Johnson of Russell County in western Virginia, spoke at a recent union rally and sees organized labor's interest in the governor's race as an important link to the state's history.

"If it had not been for the union in the coal mines and in the coal fields, Virginia would not be what it is today, and especially in our area, in Southwestern Virginia. My granddaughter would not be able to say, 'I want to be Governor of Virginia,' without the unions that have progressed us to where we are today."

Critics of union political contributions say their influence is not welcomed by some businesses that believe union activity could hurt their profits. Johnson disagrees, saying that a local union presence has been welcomed by many who have seen a better standard of living and higher wages as a result. And, while unions have donated more than $2 million in the governor's race, the PACs have outspent them by a ratio of three-to-one.

The Washington Post is tracking and reporting donations in the Virginia race online at http://projects.washingtonpost.com/metro/va/campaign-finance.
