GLENDALE, Ariz. - The countdown is on for the kick-off at the Fiesta Bowl, and the countdown clock is also starting today for this year's national census. Those events come together today as the U.S. Bureau of the Census starts off regional road tours to raise awareness of the population count. A traveling interactive exhibit for the Denver census region will be at the game as Boise State faces Texas Christian, with thousands of Idahoans in attendance.

Lee Gash-Maxey is a tour producer, who says the goal is to explain the reasons behind each of the ten questions on the census forms, which will arrive in mailboxes this March.

"They'll see each question in a life-sized panel. And they can walk through and just get a feel for what they're going to be asked when their questionnaire arrives in the mail."

She says the exhibit is designed to explain why getting an accurate census count is critical, since the numbers are used for all kinds of important decisions.

"That's everything that happens in your local communities, in terms of funding, in terms of schools, government representation."

For the last census in 2000, about 65 percent of people mailed in their forms, and most of the rest were contacted in person by Census Bureau workers. The mail-in forms save tax dollars, so this year's goal is get at least 70 percent of Americans to send them in.
