NAHVILLE, Tenn. - Un donativo de la organización "U.S. Housing and Urban Development" (Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de los Estados Unidos) ayudará a hombres sin hogar y adictos a las drogas o el alcohol a encontrar su camino para abandonar las calles, por medio de un programa que puede aprovechar este dinero para expander sus servicios.

Se espera que los recientes donativos de dicha organización ayuden a "Welcome Home" (Bienvenido a Casa) y a cientos otros más de programas que auxilian a personas sin hogar, y algo de ese dinero proviene de Tennessee. Los ministerios "Welcome Home" de Nashville recibirán más de 250 mil dólares para impulsar su creciente labor. Su Director, Daryl Murray, afirma que "Welcome Home" ayuda a los hombres a mantenerse sobrios y volverse productivos.

"Tal vez atendamos unos cien compañeros por año. Tenemos una capacidad de 27 camas en total. A los compañeros les pedimos que hagan un compromiso de seis meses. Algunos de ellos se quedan de principio a fin, otros no, otros vienen y van... es parte del proceso."

Murray comenta que en "Welcome Home" el proceso toma entre seis meses y un año para mostrar resultados, mientras los hombres trabajan en sí mismos para encontrar las causas de sus adicciones. Dice que al terminar el programa ya están alejados de su "derecho a sufrir" y asumen su responsabilidad individual, adquieren independencia y consiguen trabajos.

"Normalmente no nos traemos a un compañero directo de la calle. La mayoría han pasado ya sea por un hospital o uno de los centros psiquiátricos o de tratamiento, y ya después vienen a nosotros."

"Welcome Home" aplica principios cristianos y los 12 pasos para ayudar a 18 hombres en sus dos locaciones temporales. Murray dice que el nuevo donativo HUD permitirá que el programa consiga un local más grande y atienda a más personas.
