DES MOINES, Iowa - Un nuevo estudio sobre mujeres que buscan tener un aborto en Iowa encontró que casi el 14 por ciento habían vivido por lo menos un caso de abuso sexual o físico durante el año. Penny Dickey es la Presidenta de Planned Parenthood del Heartland, organización que junto con la Universidad de Iowa realizaron este estudio. Comenta que estos resultados demuestran la necesidad de incluir checar a las pacientes sobre violencia íntima con su pareja.

"Y de ahí necesitamos ir un paso más para aquellas que se sienten en peligro dentro de su actual situación y necesitamos asegurarnos que podemos dirigirlas hacia recursos específicos que las ayudarán."

Dice Dickey que antes de este estudio innovador, los proveedores de servicios de aborto no hacían las preguntas adecuadas.

"En general, los proveedores no hacen preguntas a sus clientas, así mismo, las mujeres tampoco dan información privada; pero lo que si encontramos es que si le preguntas a la mujer, ella te dirá cual es su circunstancia."

Añade que los investigadores también encontraron que la mayoría de las mujeres han ya abandonado su relación antes de hacer el aborto y un poco más del 8 por ciento de clientes que buscan abortar tienen síntomas de abuso físico por parte de su pareja.
