Footsteps For the Future in Pennsylvania's Highlands

EMMAUS, Penn. - Pennsylvania's Highlands are made up of more than a million acres of forests and farmlands, lakes and streams. And, within those areas, hubs — or conservation priority areas — play key roles in maintaining the integrity of the landscape.

A new network of trails on South Mountain in the Lehigh Valley sits in one of those hubs. Wildlands Conservancy Project Manager Kevin Fister says the six-mile project offers a navigation route for hikers, bikers and birdwatchers, and also serves as a link to other areas of the Highlands.

"There's long-term plans to connect the South Mountain trail system with the Bethlehem Greenway project, which will connect to the D and L Trail. That would connect from Philadelphia, all the way up north to White Haven and possibly further."

He points out that South Mountain is home to a number of unique natural communities, including vernal pools that provide habitat for a variety of salamanders and turtles.

"One of the things that we have been doing lately is closing, seasonally, some of the trails that would possibly interfere with the mating certain creatures will do during certain times of year."

As the green backdrop for the Lehigh Valley, Fister says South Mountain is better known to some residents than others. The trail system is one way to get more people acquainted with it, face-to-face.

"Most people know that it's there, they recognize it very much with that backdrop. However, they're not so much familiar with the trailhead; they're not so much familiar with the fact that we own a part of it and that it's a preserve, and that it's protected."

Along with the benefits for those who wish to enjoy nature, adds Fister, the Wildlands Conservancy makes an effort to preserve the lands it owns along the trails, to help ensure that the area's plants and wildlife are protected.
