South Dakotans Volunteer to Spend Time in Jail for the Holidays

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - This holiday season, some South Dakotans are willingly heading to jail - to spread hope and cheer. The holiday visits are part of the Person-to-Person (P-2) ministry supported by the Association of Christian Churches of South Dakota. Volunteers from various congregations simply take time to visit and talk.

Tracey Eberhard is the P-2 project coordinator for the Minnehaha County Jail. She says such visits are especially important during the holidays.

"It's bad enough normally during the year, but during the holidays it's just compounded by the fact that they're not with their loved ones. Having a friend to come and visit them really gives them something to look forward to, and helps them to get through it."

She says a similar program at the state prison has helped to lower recidivism among inmates that participate. She adds that staff at the Minnehaha jail have told her the visits make a difference. Eberhard would like to see the program in more jails, and notes that volunteers are always welcome.

"We always need more volunteers, especially men. I would like to see it so that every time an inmate asks for a P-2 friend, I could assign them one."

Eberhard stresses that the program isn't about pushing religion on anyone, but to simply offer encouragement and support.
