AUSTIN, Texas - Varias organizaciones con presencia estatal se reúnen este lunes para señalar los problemas que ven en la nueva propuesta de ley "Identificación del Elector" (SB14), presentada ante la Legislatura de Texas, que pudiera ser la más rigurosa de todo el país.

La idea es que un pasaporte, una licencia de conducir, una identificación militar o un documento de ciudadanía con fotografía sean las únicas "pruebas" aceptables para acceder a las urnas. La iniciativa está siendo promovida como medio para afianzar la confianza de los electores, pero varias organizaciones que se reúnen este lunes insisten en señalar los inconvenientes. Luis Figueroa, abogado del equipo legislativo del Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (Fondo Mexico-Americano de Defensa Legal), dice que las minorías residentes, gente con discapacidades, estudiantes de college y personas en edad avanzada correrían el riesgo de ser rechazados en las votaciones.

"Aún más problemas genera la cantidad de dinero y recursos que se destinarán a esta ley para manejar un problema que no parece estar manifestándose en Texas."

Figueroa señala que la personalización del elector es una instancia rara en Texas, o en cualquier otro estado, y que ya se pide una identificación antes de votar, aunque no necesariamente con fotografía. La propuesta menciona el uso del dinero de la ley "Help America Vote" para cubrir algunos de los costos.

Anita Previtt, vicepresidenta de la League of Women Voters of Texas (Liga de Mujeres Electoras de Texas), declara que la propuesta desanimará a los votantes legítimos al hacerlos saltar a través de otro aro, y que llega cuando los votantes de Texas ya de por sí están reticentes a acudir a las urnas.

"En la elección general pasada, la concurrencia de electores en Texas fue la más baja de todos los estados del país."

La propuesta de ley incluye provisiones para ayudar a quienes no tengan ninguna de las cuatro formas de identificación, a que las obtengan sin costo, con algunas excepciones en los requisitos de identificación para quienes rebasen los 70 años.
