Rethinking "National Security" in Small-town Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. - When it comes to national security, two longtime military men say it is time for America to refocus its strategy, and rural communities could make the difference in turning the nation in a new direction. They shared their views with small-town leaders and community organizers from across the country at the recent National Rural Assembly, including some from Oregon.

Marine Col. Mark Mykleby and Navy Capt. Wayne Porter would like to see Congress pass a new "National Prosperity and Security Act." They have laid out their arguments in a paper entitled, "A National Strategic Narrative."

Porter told the group the best "defense" America will have in the future is not force or power, but strength and influence - and that means good schools, sustainability, and stable communities, he says.

"Americans need to recognize that we are part of this interdependent, global system and that, by demonstrating the efficacy of our own values as Americans, we can provide leadership that the rest of the world still desperately needs."

One Oregonian in the audience was Maia Enzer, policy program director with Sustainable Northwest. She says the message was that, instead of spending time and resources hunting for risks and threats to the U.S., the nation should be focusing on opportunities here at home - an idea that went over well with the crowd.

"That's exactly the business of all the rural leaders that I know in the West. They are saying, 'What is the opportunity for our future? What is the opportunity for the land, for the economics of our community, and how can we contribute to that?'"

Sustainable Northwest develops partnerships in rural Oregon for green energy and land stewardship. Enzer says the National Rural Assembly brings people from hundreds of small towns together to focus on rural health, education, natural resources and community investment.
