MANCHESTER, N.H. - Deaths related to lung disease have now surpassed stroke as the third leading cause of death in the Unites States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Deaths from Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease (CLRD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) continue to rise. Lee Gilman, senior director for health promotion and public policy at the American Lung Association of New England, says she isn't surprised by the new ranking.

"The numbers of patients being diagnosed with COPD had been on the increase, and this more recent change has occurred because there's been a change in the way that they categorize the deaths."

In the past, Gilman says, many deaths from lung disease were simply diagnosed as pneumonia. While no cure is available for COPD, she says, early diagnosis is key - and help is available for patients and their families.

"There are actually screenings being offered for folks in various sites to be screened for COPD for early diagnosis, and then possible referral for follow-up with their health-care provider. So it's up and coming, in terms of the fact that New Hampshire is beginning to really look at this issue and beginning to address it."

Smoking continues to be the largest factor in lung disease, along with air pollution and exposure to harsh chemical fumes.
