Idaho Republican Pollster: Republicans Support EPA Clean Air Rules

BOISE, Idaho - New clean-air rules from the federal Environmental Protection Agency which set limits on air pollution from coal-fired power plants have been a target in Congress - with legislation introduced to reverse the rule. Republicans backing the plan say the rules would result in lost jobs and higher utility bills. However, a new survey of voters across the nation finds strong support for the rules on health and environmental grounds - even among Republicans.

Republican pollster Greg Strimple of GS Strategy Group in Boise says he tried to poke holes in the research, but was convinced by the details.

"I advise my political candidates: You need to find issues that unite the Republican Party and divide Democrats, and this issue does the opposite. These are not the types of issues that Republicans should be taking up."

The poll measured voters' feelings on two clean-air rules, the Cross State Air Pollution Rule and the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards Rule. Both require power plants to cut harmful emissions in the interest of public health. Strimple says the public understands the benefits as well as the costs - which can also be connected to new jobs to retrofit old power plants.

"I think it's very important for members of the Republican Party to understand that 60 percent of Americans now own stock, and they're able to have a very mature debate and conversation about complex economic arguments."

The survey also showed bipartisan support for EPA authority to set clean-air rules.

The Ceres investor group paid for the poll, which was conducted by GS Strategy Group and Hart Research Associates. Its full results are online at ceres.org.
