COLUMBUS, Ohio - With the holidays upon us, so are the temptations that promise to pack on the pounds. However, experts say that with a few easy steps, you can maintain and not gain this time of year.

As director of Wellness Coaching at the Cleveland Clinic, registered dietician Amy Jamieson-Petonic says it comes down to the old exhortation to "Eat, drink and be merry." When it comes to eating, you can still indulge - in moderation.

"Don't eat it unless it's fabulous. If it's something that you really, really want and you don't eat it any other time during the year, by all means enjoy it. Have a small portion of it, and move forward."

She says don't deprive yourself of foods, or you'll just end up eating more. She adds that it also helps to stay hydrated, so be sure you're drinking plenty of water, and "be merry" by planning a family event that also includes some exercise.

And she says it's okay to indulge in a little alcohol: again, the key is moderation.

"Have lower-calorie drinks, such as a glass of wine or a wine spritzer, as opposed to some of the other drinks. I mean, some of the alcoholic beverages can be as much as 400 to 500 calories, and that's as many calories as you need for a full meal."

Jamieson-Petonic says staying active can help relieve holiday stress, so "being merry" can include planning a fun family activity that gets you moving. Also, she says getting enough sleep is crucial.

"There's so many research studies out there that show that, when you're sleep-deprived, you tend to take in more calories, you tend to be more stressed, and it tends to increase your risk of chronic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes."
