LAS CRUCES, N.M. – El profesor de horticultura en el Departamento de Plantas y Ciencias Medioambientales de la Universidad del Estado de Nuevo México, John Mexcal, dice que esta temporada navideña estaremos viendo más árboles de navidad de plástico, debido a que las condiciones de sequía y las heladas del invierno pasado han causado dificultad en la cosecha de árboles navideños de calidad.

“Con temperaturas altas, sequía de largo plazo, y luego estos lotes sin cosechar están agravando más el problema esta temporada, aún más de lo que hubiera sido en los años 50's.”

Otro factor es infestación de insectos. Los escarabajos de corteza abundan cuando los árboles están sintiendo estrés, algo que puede ser causado por sequía o cuando los árboles crecen sin mucho espacio entre ellos.

Mexcal añade que aún con la dificultad que es poder cultivar árboles saludables, él prefiere tener un árbol natural a uno de plástico.

“Ya sea uno silvestre o cultivado en granjas de árboles navideños, no estás usando los productos derivados del petróleo utilizados para hacer el árbol de plástico. Los árboles naturales pueden ser reciclados para convertirlos en mantillo.”

Nuevo México no es un estado que produce árboles de navidad, pero antes de que la industria de árboles navideños en el Noroeste se estableciera, los árboles de Nuevo México eran muy populares.

“La industria de árboles navideños de Oregon y Washington fue establecida con semillas del pino Douglas-fir del Bosque Nacional Lincoln.”

Porque los árboles de Nuevo México crecen en un ambiente seco, generalmente duran más adentro de una casa que los árboles de Oregon y Washington. Es por eso que los cultivadores de esas áreas han incorporado algunas de las características obtenidas por las semillas de los pinos de Nuevo México.
