LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Support for many environmental causes seems to run strictly along party lines, but a group of Republicans is trying to change that in Congress, and the shift could mean action for Nevada. Republicans for Environmental Protection (REP) is asking House Speaker John Boehner to help push 19 bills through the House, legislation that would designate new wilderness areas, conserve wetlands and fight invasive species in 14 states including Nevada.

REP spokesman Jim DiPeso says it is not easy being "green" and Republican, too, these days, but that was not always the case.

"Ronald Reagan signed more wilderness bills than any other president before or since his administration. What we're trying to say is that conservation is conservative. It is part of the conservative ethic to care for the land and to be good stewards."

Of the 19 bills, the one affecting Nevada is the Pine Forest Range Recreation Enhancement Act of 2011, which would designate 26,000 acres in Humboldt County for wilderness-area protection. The Senate and House versions are S 1788 & HR 3377, respectively.

Shaaron Netherton, executive director of Friends of Nevada Wilderness, says the Pine Forest measure is the result of what she calls "common-sense planning" involving both regional and local people to ensure that the concerns of sportsmen, ranchers and landowners are included along with the goal of protecting wildlife.

"It's a bill that has no opposition, it's not linked to anything else, it's just one area - the Pine Forest Range. It sets a great example of people working together, and party lines don't matter. It's not a partisan issue."

DiPeso says he understands that Congress has been swamped, but says there is no good reason to delay bills that lawmakers actually agree on.

"When we wrote that letter to Speaker Boehner, we were pointing out, 'Look, you have all these conservation bills that have Republican sponsors. Let's go ahead and pass 'em.'"

In addition to Nevada, some of the bills Speaker Boehner is being asked to prioritize involve public lands in California, Idaho and Washington.
