Friday, April 6, 2012

BOISE, Idaho – A couple hundred Idahoans are expected today (Friday) on the Statehouse steps at the Rally for Idaho's Children, in recognition of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The theme is, "Let's talk about it."

Rally speaker Matt Pipkin runs Commit 65, a local nonprofit working to empower victims of child sexual abuse to shed the shame, guilt and fear associated with the violations. He says it's a heavy topic, but rallies like this help move beyond that weight.

"It's a fun, unique way to support the cause, and I think that if we can get the general public to support the cause, then people will start to talk."

Pipkin says another angle on lifting up the issue is his organization's planned attempt to break the world record for flight - 65 days in an airplane without touching ground.

Jennifer Landhuis, program manager for the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence says those at the rally will be encouraged to think about personal connections to abuse and violence - which is an important foundation for prevention.

"'I talk about it because,' or 'my connection is' – so that folks can take it to that next level, and figure out what their individual commitment is to the issue."

Friday's rally begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Idaho State Capitol, 700 W. Jefferson, Boise. Commit 65, the Idaho Children's Trust Fund, the Women's and Children's Alliance, and the Idaho Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence organized the event.
