Cuatro estados lanzan esfuerzo latino para salvar el Río Colorado

PHOENIX - Un Nuevo grupo de 13 mil latinos de cuatro estados del Suroeste está cada vez más preocupado por el desequilibrio creciente que hay entre la demanda y el abasto de agua del Río Colorado. La organización "Nuestro Río" apoya acciones para mantener el caudal del río.

El coordinador del grupo en Arizona, Sal Rivera, sugiere lo que él llama medidas "prácticas," que incluyen la eficiencia agrícola, la conservación urbana y la creación de bancos de agua.

"No puedo recordar cuántos cientos de miles de albercas tenemos en Phoenix, pero el simple hábito de ponerles cubiertas evitaría los inmensos volúmenes de evaporación. Ya sabes, la aplicación de técnicas más eficientes de irrigación y riego, usando las plantas apropiadas."

Nuestro Río realizó eventos inaugurales el jueves en cuatro estados del Suroeste, y destacó los vínculos históricos entre la comunidad latina y el río. Rivera dice que mucha gente no se da cuenta de qué tan crucial es para la economía de la región, tener un Río Colorado sano.

"El 85 por ciento de toda la superficie de riego de Arizona se abastece del Río Colorado. Seis punto seis millones de arizonianos beben agua del Río Colorado. El río sostiene al menos 82 mil empleos tan solo en Arizona."

Rivera dice que los Latinos tienen un vínculo especial con el Río Colorado, por su historia en los estados del Suroeste.

"Algo tan sencillo como César Chávez, quien nació en Yuma y murió en San Luis, cerca de la cuenca del río; algunos de los primeros exploradores españoles que vinieron y exploraron a lo largo del Río Colorado; el hecho de que nuestra comunidad haya estado involucrada durante tanto tiempo en la industria agrícola."

Un momento culminante de los cuatro eventos fue el debut público de un corrido nuevo, que fue a la vez una remembranza de César Chávez y un llamado a que se instrumenten políticas que promuevan un Río Colorado sano para las generaciones futuras.
