Walking for Healthy Hearts

Thursday, August 30, 2012

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - More than 2,500 people gathered in the chilly drizzle last Saturday in Sioux Falls to walk for heart health. They were part of the annual Eastern South Dakota Heart Walk. Chrissy Spoo of the American Heart Association of South Dakota says the large turnout was inspiring.

"It tells us something we already knew: that heart disease touches so many lives. Since one in three people will be impacted by heart disease in their lifetime, we know that friends, family, people that are important to us will be affected by it. That is what was indicated by those numbers of people who braved the rain on Saturday to come out and celebrate with us."

The walk is also a major fundraiser for the organization. Spoo expects to come close to their goal of $235,000.

"The money goes to support the programs of the American Heart Association, so it supports the things we do here in the state of South Dakota. We fund a lot of research that's done right here in South Dakota: For every one dollar we raise here we get three dollars back that goes into research into heart disease and finding a cure for heart disease. It also goes into public education programs, teaching people CPR, teaching people how to live a heart-healthy life."

Spoo says they wanted to use this walk to again remind women that they need to take special care with their hearts.
