DES MOINES, Iowa - Cuando se trata de la educación sexual, se sabe que los padres son los mejores educadores. Octubre se reconoce como el Mes Nacional "Vamos a Hablar" y es una oportunidad perfecta para que las familias incien la conversación sobre el sexo. Una encuesta nacional por parte de Planned Parenthood y la revista Family Circle sobre la comunicación entre padres y adolescentes ha hecho algunos descubrimientos sorprendentes, de acuerdo con Jenna Carlson, educadora de salud con el Planned Parenthood del Heartland.

"Lo que encontramos fue que la mayoría de los padres hablan con sus hijos sobre el sexo. Y aún más importante, hemos encontrado que en realidad es que son los adolescentes los que se sienten más incómodos hablando del tema que los padres.”

Además de hablar sobre los detalles específicos del sexo, Carlson dice que se necesita también considerar tener una conversación más amplia con los hijos acerca de la relación amorosa entre parejas.

"La sexualidad abarca todo - y no se trata sólo del sexo. Hablar acerca de lo que es una relación en su conjunto, es tan importante para el desarrollo de nuestros niños, porque les ayuda a aprender cuáles son las relaciones sanas."

La encuesta encontró que más del 40 por ciento de los padres dijeron que hablaron con los adolescentes sobre decir "no" a la actividad sexual, y casi el 30 por ciento dijeron que hablaron con sus hijos adolescentes sobre los métodos anticonceptivos.
