#GivingTuesday? Coloradans Ahead of the Curve

DENVER - It's "#GivingTuesday" - a designation that may sound strangely familiar to many Coloradans. For the last three years, the Centennial State has played host to a similar event, "Colorado Gives Day." It's an online initiative asking people to step back from buying for a day and instead give to the charities of their choice.

Dana Rinderknecht, manager of online giving with the Community First Foundation, says its had significant success.

"Last year, we raised $12.8 million. The most common donation we got was $50. That's a lot of $50 donations, to add up to that $12.8 million; but it really does make a huge difference to these nonprofits. "

She adds that Colorado Gives Day offers donors and nonprofits an extra perk: the credit card processing fees are covered, and there's an Incentive Fund to boost donations.

This year, Colorado Gives Day takes place on December 4, in one week.

While "Hashtag Giving Tuesday" organically grew through social media, Colorado Gives Day began as a partnership between the Colorado First Foundation and businesses like Colorado-based First Bank.

But Rinderknecht adds social media are also playing a big role.

"You can actually go to the First Bank Facebook page, answer a trivia question, and you could win an additional thousand dollars for your favorite nonprofit."

She says the Boettcher and El Pomar Foundations are helping with outreach beyond the seven-county Denver metro area.

"We're really going to start raising the awareness out-state, really get to partner better with nonprofits from all over the state, and it's been very exciting."

If people want to participate in #GivingTuesday and still help their favorite Colorado nonprofit, Rinderknecht says they can go to ColoradoGivesDay.org today, where they'll have the option to "schedule a donation for Colorado Gives Day."

More than 1,200 non-profits, such as the GLBT Community Center of Colorado, are taking part in Colorado Gives Day.
