Ohio Advocates Hail President’s Gun Safety Proposal

COLUMBUS, Ohio - President Obama has unveiled his plan to help curb gun violence. The package of legislation for Congress includes a ban on high-capacity magazines and the reinstatement of a ban on some assault-style weapons.

Toby Hoover, executive director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence, calls these "common sense measures," along with the proposal to have mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales. It speaks to what they are hearing from concerned Ohioans, she says.

"This is a very welcome thing to happen because people want to let the President know, and their legislators know, that they want them to do this. What we've been hearing for weeks now is 'tell me what to do, I've been quiet too long, I want this to happen.'"

The National Rifle Association says law-abiding gun owners should not be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen, and the group claims the push is more about attacking the Second Amendment than keeping children safe.

Ohio law states that teachers and staff are allowed to carry guns on school grounds with school board approval. Many districts are discussing allowing staff to be armed, including the Montpelier school district, which recently approved the carrying of handguns by its custodial staff. Hoover says she is concerned.

"We're watching that very closely because it obviously, from our perspective, should be a law enforcement officer and resource officer and not any other kind of staff or volunteers. It's a danger."

Twenty-three executive actions were also announced by the President. They include a directive to strengthen the national criminal background-check system and a move to allow for the study of gun violence at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Hoover says it's a step in the right direction.

"We've been waiting a very long time to see some action on this, so it really is a very, very good day to see America say, 'Yep, we agree with the President. It's time for change.'"

Guns are the second leading cause of injury death in Ohio and in the United States as a whole.
