ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico will be a part of an effort to end violence against women that will take place in 189 countries. This attempt to end violence against women everywhere is the brainchild of author and activist Eve Ensler, who in her travels around the world saw violence perpetrated against women in various forms and decided to bring serious attention to the issue.

Susan Singer is the lead organizer of the event, called One Billion Rising.

"One in three women all over the planet will be raped or beaten or abused in her lifetime," Singer explained. "One in three - that adds up to 1 billion people."

Events are planned for Wednesday and Thursday in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Socorro, Las Cruces, Ruidoso, Silver City and Taos. Men and women are being asked "to dance, to strike, to rise."

Organizers hope 1 billion people around the planet will rise up and say no to violence, Singer said. She invited people across the nation to attend the event, anticipating that some will be moved to take action.

"I hope they will go out with a greater awareness of what the situation is, understand better what's happening all around the world and not be willing to let the status quo remain," she said. "I hope they will go out and make a change."

The website to sign up for the events is One Billion Rising.
