Minnesotans Urged to Adopt, Not Shop for a New Pet

PRIOR LAKE, Minn. - Minnesotans are being encouraged to consider adopting a shelter or rescue dog instead of shopping at stores or online for a new furry member of the family.

According to Keri Marsh, co-owner of Protecting Paws Animal Rescue in Prior Lake, adopted dogs make wonderful companions.

"Actually most of the dogs we've gotten in make great pets," Marsh declared. "I actually rescued a pit bull 15 years ago from a pit bull rescue in Minnesota and he was the most amazing dog I've ever had."

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, around 3 to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the U.S. each year.

Marsh said the pet overpopulation is due to a lack of animals being spayed or neutered, along with the number that are being abandoned.

"And those are from people who are breeding and get rid of their unwanted dogs or people who don't have the time for dogs," she said. "There are too many dogs out there that don't have a home."

Another upside of adopting, said Marsh, is that it can be a lot less expensive than purchasing a puppy.

"They're coming from puppy mills, and those people charge a ridiculous amount of money," she charged. "When you adopt you pay between $100 and $400, but they come fully vetted."

Marsh also noted that some of the dogs that end up in shelters are purebred, and there are also rescue organizations that do focus on specific breeds.
