Survey Says: Idahoans Support Immigration Reform

BOISE, Idaho - Sixty-seven percent of Idahoans polled recently said they support the immigration reform package drafted by the so-called "Gang of Eight" in the U.S. Senate. The bill (S 744) contains border security measures and sets a long list of requirements to be met over more than a decade in order for immigrants currently in the country without documents to become citizens.

While the issue is often perceived as partisan, Brock McCleary, president, Harper Polling, said Republican support is strong.

"Republicans - conservatives, moderate, whatever they may be - have found that impeding progress on reform, standing in the way of getting this problem solved, has really exacerbated it," McCleary said.

Seventy-eight percent said they'd be more likely to vote for an elected official who supports the Senate legislation. The bill passed a procedural hurdle earlier in the week; Idaho Republican Sens. Mike Crapo and Jim Risch voted against it.

Idaho is not the only traditionally red state showing support for reform. Charles Spies, co-founder of Republicans for Immigration Reform, a political action committee, said the results from the other 28 states polled tell the same story.

"This shows that Republican voters across 29 states overwhelmingly support the bipartisan approach of the 'Gang of Eight' bill - and also believe that it's time to get it done," Spies said.

The survey also found that to 89 percent of the Gem Staters polled, it is important for the immigration system to be fixed this year.

Last week, Idaho Republican Congressman Raul Labrador quit a U.S. House group working on reform. He said he was going to draft his own immigration legislation.

The poll, conducted by Harper Polling and Public Policy Polling, was sponsored by the Alliance for Citizenship, Partnership for a New American Economy and Republicans for Immigration Reform. Full poll results are available at http://americasvoiceonline.org.
