Survey: Hoosiers Support Immigration Reform

INDIANAPOLIS - About a hundred immigration-reform supporters marched from the Statehouse to Monument Circle in Indianapolis Saturday, urging lawmakers to support legislation allowing undocumented immigrants in the U.S. to seek citizenship. Sixty-nine percent of Hoosiers polled support the immigration reform package drafted by the so-called "Gang of Eight" in the U.S. Senate. The bill contains border security measures, and sets a long list of requirements that take more than a decade for immigrants currently in the country without documents to become citizens.

While the issue is often perceived as partisan, Brock McCleary, president of Harper Polling, said Republican support is strong.

"Republicans - conservatives, moderate, whatever they may be - have found that impeding progress on reform, standing in the way of getting this problem solved, has really exacerbated it."

In remarks on the Senate floor recently, Indiana Republican Senator Dan Coats focused on the need to secure the border. Democratic Senator Joe Donnelly has not made his position on the measure known. Sixty-one percent of Hoosiers polled believe it's very important to fix the immigration system this year.

Indiana isn't the only traditionally red state showing support for reform. Charles Spies, a co-founder of Republicans for Immigration Reform - a political action committee - said the results from the other 28 states polled tell the same story.

"This shows that Republican voters across 29 states overwhelmingly support the bipartisan approach of the 'Gang of Eight' bill, and also believe that it's time to get it done," he declared.

In Indiana, 44 percent of those polled were Republicans, 33 percent Democrats and 23 percent were either Independents or from another party. The margin of error is 4.3 percent.

Polling was done by Harper Polling and Public Policy Polling, for the Alliance for Citizenship, Partnership for a New American Economy and Republicans for Immigration Reform. Full results are at bit.ly/14zpOFP.
