WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva has been honored for his strong dedication to conservation issues as part of Great Outdoors America Week.

Several conservation groups presented Grijalva, D-Ariz., with the Congressional Champion Award on Wednesday in the nation's capital.

"He has consistently, over his career, and particularly as a member of Congress, demonstrated a true commitment to protecting America's and Arizona's natural heritage and special outdoor places," said Mike Quigley, Arizona representative for the Wilderness Society.

In Arizona, Quigley said, Grijalva has been a leader in such efforts as protecting the Grand Canyon from expanded uranium mining, enlarging Saguaro National Park and protecting the Santa Rita Mountains outside Tucson.

"He's done a number of things to preserve the natural heritage and great outdoor spaces in our state, including most recently introducing the Arizona Sonoran Desert Heritage Act," Quigley said. "That would preserve very special Sonoran Desert landscape west of Phoenix and northwest of Gila Bend."

Grijalva said he was very gratified to receive the award, and that he always has tried to strike a balance between what we take out of our public lands and what we leave.

"Our public lands, our mountains, our canyons, our timber, our forests - there's got to be some of that always for the next generation," he said. "It defines us as a country, and without them, we wouldn't be the country that we are."

Eight other senators and representatives from both parties also received Congressional Champion Awards on Wednesday, including New Mexico's two U.S. senators and Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo.

Outdoors enthusiasts from Arizona and across the nation gathered in Washington this week for briefings on issues such as energy development on public lands and to meet with members of their respective congressional delegations.
