NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As the long holiday weekend continues, a reminder for drivers in Tennessee – keep your hands on the wheel and your focus on the road.

Distracted driving is said to be a factor in at least one-in-four crashes and Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Miller says law enforcement will be watching.

"If you are using your cell phone, if you are using your text message operations, if you are sending an email,” he warns. “If you are doing anything of that nature that is unsafe and distracting and taking away from your obligations of being a safe driver on the highway, we are going to pull you over and cite you for a distracted driving violation."

Nationally, more than 3,000 people are killed in distracted driving crashes each year.

Other than getting rid of distractions, Miller advises drivers to buckle up, don't speed and if you plan to drink, don't drive.

"The Tennessee Highway Patrol is going to be doing roadblocks as far as DUI checkpoints,” he cautions. “We're going to be doing saturations. We're going to do everything we can do to deter drinking and driving on the highways of Tennessee.

“We want everybody to be happy and have a good time and enjoy themselves, but we want everyone to be safe."
