HELENA, Mont. - Montana Community Health Centers have been enlisted to help get people signed up for health insurance coverage, something required of most Americans by next year under the Affordable Care Act. More than $1.4 million in federal funds is coming to the state to hire new outreach experts and boost technology to assist those without coverage in signing up for policies.

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius announced the grants Wednesday.

"So many Americans have spent their whole lives being frustrated, gouged, or turned away by our health care system," she declared. "Connecting them with information they need to finally get quality, affordable coverage is a huge undertaking."

The kinds of policies expected to be available for Montanans to choose from include private coverage, Healthy Montana Kids through the state, and some Medicaid insurance - although that could be limited because Montana has not accepted federal funding to expand Medicaid coverage options.

HHS expects the Montana funding to help about 14,000 people sign up for health insurance coverage, and create 25 new jobs.

Mary Wakefield, administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration, said Health Centers know their neighborhoods best, and have been connecting people to coverage for years.

"Over and over again, Health Centers have seen firsthand the health challenges faced by families without health insurance," she said. "We really wanted to capitalize on their long-standing experience in enrolling medically-underserved populations."

Montana has 17 Community Health Centers at 89 sites.

Details on Montana funding are at HRSA.gov.
