POCATELLO, Idaho - Retiring on a budget while living the good life ... AARP The Magazine examined cities across the nation that fit that bill, and Pocatello, Idaho, made the list. Ten cities were chosen for their amenities and low cost of living, based on a budget of $30,000 a year.

According to Jennifer Bowen, the director of marketing and promotion at the Pocatello Chamber of Commerce, it's the kind of place that's terrific for people of all ages.

"We have so much diversity here. There's absolutely something for everyone here," she declared. "We were known as the world's 'Smile Capital' for many, many years."

The rankings considered median house prices and property taxes. Houses in Pocatello run to about $127,000 and taxes come in at about $1200. Towns were also judged on food, coffee and free entertainment options.

Bowen said Pocatello's nickname is the "Gate City." It has a small-town feel, but isn't far from other opportunities for shopping and fun; just two hours to Salt Lake City, Sun Valley or Jackson, Wyoming.

"And here you are within 15 to 20 minutes of hiking, biking, camping and skiing."

Other towns that made the list of "best" for those 50-plus: Bangor, Maine; Erie, Pennsylvania; and South Bend, Indiana.

The full list is at AARP.org.
