PHILADELPHIA - Summer vacation may be underway, but come fall more students than ever will be taking part in Pennsylvania's school breakfast programs. The increase is due in large part to Pennsylvania's first-ever School Breakfast Challenge.

The challenge calls for schools to recruit as many eligible students as possible to begin their day with breakfast at school. This year's winner, Feltonville School of Arts and Science in Philadelphia, posted an incredible jump in participation by soaring from 29 percent of students in the 2012-2013 school year to 77 percent this year.

Julie Zaebst, Policy Center Manager at the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger, says the idea is to bring school breakfast numbers more in line with the numbers of students getting free or reduced price lunches at school.

"Of the low-income kids who receive school lunches, less than 50 percent receive school breakfast, so there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of the number of kids getting breakfast at school," says Zaebst.

Schools across the commonwealth are behind the School Breakfast Challenge. Nearly 900 schools statewide completed the challenge this year, with the goal of increasing participation by 30 percent. As the winning school, Feltonville School of Arts and Science received a cash prize of $3,000.

Zaebst says expanding school meals to more dayparts ensures children's bodies have the fuel they need to absorb as much learning as possible.

"We know that when kids eat school breakfast, it has a positive impact on their health. It also has a positive impact on their learning and behavior at school, so it's a really important program for those two reasons."
