The Wild West: CO's Multitude of Cases on Same-Sex Marriage
Monday, July 14, 2014
DENVER - Colorado is becoming the "Wild West" again, at least when it comes to same-sex marriage law. The state's marriage ban is on shaky ground with at least four big decisions chipping away at it in the past week.
Clerks in Boulder, Pueblo and Denver Counties are issuing licenses to same-sex couples. And an Adams County judge declared the state's ban unconstitutional.
Mindy Barton, legal director for the GLBT Community Center of Colorado, said even she's had a hard time keeping up with the latest news.
"It is the wild wild west," said Barton. "We're talking about things that change day by day and hour by hour at this point, within Colorado's fight for marriage equality."
Utah's Attorney General will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court the lower court ruling declaring that state's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. The decision could impact the status of Colorado's same-sex marriage ban because it shares the same appellate court as Utah.
Barton added that the center is doing its best to try and stay on top of the changes, so Colorado same-sex couples understand their rights.
