Wasteful Home Energy Use Lowers WV Efficiency Rankings

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - West Virginia ranks low for consumer energy efficiency in a new report, mostly because of wasteful home energy use. Financial advice website Wallethub looks at home and transportation energy efficiency every year and ranks the states on how well they do.

West Virginia came in seventh from the bottom this year. Jill Gonzalez, a spokeswoman with Wallethub, says the poor showing is mostly because of the amount of energy people use at home.

"Ages of homes within a state can really affect this number," says Gonzalez. "Obviously, older homes are generally less energy efficient, so that could have really affected West Virginia's ranking."

Gonzalez says the rankings are based on two ratios, miles per gallon on the road, and a similar ratio for home energy use.

She explains home energy use is measured by taking the total energy used by a household and comparing it to degree-days, which show how much heating or cooling is needed in a particular area. She says the ranking for each state combines those two numbers.

"The first is going to be home energy efficiency. And then, the second will be car energy efficiency and that will look at the annual vehicle miles driven and the gallons of gasoline consumed," says Gonzalez.

West Virginia, according to Gonzalez, did better on total average miles per gallon, ending up in the middle of the rankings compared to other states.

Despite its relatively low electricity prices, Wallethub says West Virginia shows some of the highest total energy costs for consumers. Gonzalez says even though some kinds of home heating and cooling might be inexpensive, West Virginians use a lot of them for the climate. She says, in fact, cheap power might contribute to people paying less attention to energy efficiency at home.

"Well, possibly because it's so low there, people feel free to use more of it," Gonzalez says. "It's not getting the most bang for your buck if you're over-using the energy."

October is National Energy Awareness Month. According to the website, the average household spends more than $2,000 a year on energy bills. But it also says a typical dollar invested in efficiency brings more than twice that in returns.
