BOSTON - After enduring months of campaign ads, Bay Staters are waking up today and learning how the candidates and issues they favored in this midterm fared. But today barely marks a break in the action for political insiders, as they start ramping up for the 2016 presidential election. That's according to Jill Hanauer, president and CEO of Project New America.

"We're waking up today and wanting to take a nice sigh of relief that it's over, but it's not over," says Hanauer. "Politics just started for 2016, the minute the sun rose."

Spending by outside groups on the race for the governor's office was nearly double that of four years ago, according to CommonWealth Magazine. That analysis tracks $20 million in outside money, compared with just $11 million in the 2010 Massachusetts governor's race.

Hanauer says folks in Massachusetts actually caught a minor break when it came to campaign spending by outside groups, and the bombardment of campaign ads during this election cycle.

"It was high, but if there would have been a Senate race there it would have been higher," she says. "What we're seeing is the money being spent on federal races is incredible."

Hanauer believes both parties may change tactics for 2016. She says while traditional media was popular in this midterm, campaigns may reduce their reliance on television ads, since many younger voters get their entertainment from Internet subscription services, such as Netflix.
