President Headed to Illinois to Tout Immigration Action

CHICAGO - President Obama will be in his home state of Illinois on Tuesday to promote his recent executive order on immigration that could impact up to 450,000 people living in the state.

The changes are expected to lead to fewer deportations and detentions for people in the country without authorization, especially for those with children born in the U.S.

Kica Matos, director of Immigrant Rights and Racial Justice at the Center for Community Change, says it's an announcement her organization has been waiting on for six years.

"We will celebrate this victory. We will welcome it with open arms," she says. "And we're going to go back to the hard work of continuing to fight for a permanent solution."

In Chicago, the president is scheduled to attend a morning discussion at the Polish-American Association, and later an afternoon talk at the Copernicus Center.

Matos says for years, the immigration-reform movement has sought changes in policy to keep families intact. She says this move will help.

"We can't forget that over two million people have been adversely impacted by the president's immigration policy," she says. "So it feels like this is a new page in a book that has been filled with a lot of pain for our communities."

While Matos notes comprehensive reform "must come from Congress," Republican leaders have expressed dismay with the president's order and have threatened to shut down the government in response.

Matos says Congress has long debated reform and hopes they will continue that dialogue.
