DES MOINES, Iowa – Today is World AIDS Day. And after slowly trending upwards for years, the number of new cases of HIV and AIDS is expected to be down in Iowa this year.

Randy Mayer, bureau chief of HIV, STD and Hepatitis for the Iowa Department of Public Health, says there were 122 diagnoses in Iowa last year, and preliminary numbers show the 2014 total will be down by about 10 percent.

However, he cautions that does not include those Iowans who are infected, but unaware because they haven't been tested.

"Almost half of our people get diagnosed with AIDS within a year of having an HIV diagnosis, which indicates that they've been infected probably 10 years before they actually got a test," he points out.

Mayer says it is recommended that every person, regardless of risk, be tested at least once in his or her lifetime.

Statewide, there are now around 2,100 people living with HIV and AIDS in Iowa, and Mayer says the prevalence has been predictable across the state.

"Seventy-five percent of the diagnoses happen in 10 different metropolitan areas, with about 25 percent in rural areas,” he says. “And that's been fairly consistent over a long period of time."

As of 2013, AIDS has killed more than 36 million people worldwide and an estimated 35 million are living with HIV.
