ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Following the massive consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, today's #GivingTuesday campaign calls on New Mexicans to support a variety of charities and nonprofits in their own communities.

Russell Baker serves as the executive director of the National Dance Institute (NDI) New Mexico. He says #GivingTuesday gives a deeper meaning to the season.

"Giving Tuesday is a day to help remind us all and connect us to the deeper meaning behind the holidays," says Baker. "It's about caring about one another and helping make the world a better place."

According to the #GivingTuesday website, the movement was founded in 2012 by New York's 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, and to date has engaged more than 10,000 organizations worldwide.

Baker says the National Dance Institute New Mexico provides arts and physical education programs to underserved children in urban, rural and Native American communities throughout the state. He adds that a financial donation of any size will help children in several ways.

"Charitable donations to NDI New Mexico make it possible for these young people to have dance classes and arts experiences," he says. "These are directly inspiring to young people to be their best."

Baker adds his organization provides services that will ultimately benefit more than 9,000 kids in New Mexico this year. #GivingTuesday donations can be made directly to NDI New Mexico.

More information on donating to other nonprofits is at the #GivingTuesday website at www.GivingTuesday.org.
