Victims of Sandy Hook Remembered in Minnesota Today

Thursday, December 11, 2014

DULUTH, Minn. – This Sunday marks the second anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and the victims are being remembered at events in Minnesota and across the nation.

Twenty children along with six adults were killed in the massacre on Dec. 14, 2012.

Police identified the perpetrator as a young man who brought several weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from home where investigators say he first killed his mother. He later took his own life.

That easy access to the school is a concern that people can do something about, says Dr. Charles Gessert, who’s on the board of directors of the gun violence prevention group Protect Minnesota.

"One of the messages from Sandy Hook two years later, looking back is, we have a responsibility as individuals to look at our own behavior in terms of how we store and how we manage our own weapons," he points out.

Among the Minnesota events to honor the lives lost at Sandy Hook is one set for today in Duluth, with a candle lighting and memorial service at Peace United Church of Christ.

Since Sandy Hook, there have been nearly 100 more shootings at schools, but Gessert notes that the issue goes far beyond the concerns in the classrooms, with more than 30,000 gun deaths in the U.S. each year.

He says that includes homicides, suicides and accidents.

"And then when you add in the disproportionate burden of gun violence in communities of color, and you add in the enormous cost to society of people who have been injured by guns, you end up with a very clear public health issue," he stresses.
