NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Un total de 55 mil dólares se van este viernes a cinco bancos de alimentos de Tennessee. Los fondos fueron donados por miembros de la AARP Tennessee y por patronos de Walgreens.

Las fiestas de diciembre son temporada de dar, y el regalo que hoy se presenta ayudará a muchos tennesseés que luchan por llevar comida a la mesa. Los cinco bancos de alimentos Feeding America que hay en el estado reciben cada uno un cheque por 11 mil dólares. Como hay más de un millón de personas con inseguridad alimentaria en el estado, la necesidad es enorme, dice Buster Watts, un líder de voluntariado de la AARP de Tennessee.

“Nuestra meta es asegurar que nadie a nuestro cargo pase hambre, o que siempre tengan la oportunidad de obtener alimento. Nos sentimos realmente bien por lo que hacemos.”

El dinero que se distribuye hoy fue aportado a través de un proyecto de sociedad de servicio comunitario entre la AARP y Walgreens.

Los bancos de alimentos que recibirán los fondos atienden a docenas de organizaciones menores como iglesias, refugios de emergencia, cocinas y distribuidoras de alimentos. Entre ellas está The Nashville Food Project (el Proyecto Alimentario de Nashville), cuya directora de programa Malinda Hersh destaca que ven cada vez más necesidad entre las familias de trabajadores.

“Ves mucho más familias buscando asistencia, que los padres tal vez tienen un trabajo, pero todavía no logran pagar adecuadamente sus cuentas.”

The Nashville Food Project (El Proyecto Alimentario de Nashville) prepara y sirve unas 600 comidas cada semana, con dos camiones que reparten alimentos entre quienes no tienen techo y a comunidades pobres de trabajadores.
