CARSON CITY, Nev. - Eighteen more people died in traffic crashes in Nevada in 2014 than in 2013, according to Meg Ragonese with the Nevada Department of Transportation. The agency reports 284 traffic deaths for the year.

"This rise in Nevada traffic fatalities is a tragic reminder, and an important reminder," says Ragonese. "Everyone on the road should take a second or two to ensure they are following all of the safety tips they can, and that they are safe on the road."

Ragonese says there is no one clear factor that accounts for the increase in traffic deaths. She notes traffic fatalities in many rural counties have increased, with a jump of more than 200 percent in Churchill, Lander, Storey and Humboldt counties.

According to Ragonese, while the 2014 traffic fatality numbers are up, the death rate is still well below Nevada's all-time high of 432 traffic deaths in 2006. She says deaths went down after the state increased driver safety outreach.

"The state has implemented what is called the Nevada Strategic Highway Safety Plan," she says. "That brings a group of experts together to put in place strategies to reduce traffic fatalities in very specific areas such as impaired driving, or seatbelt safety."

Ragonese says pedestrian and motorcycle-related deaths are also up, with an increase of nearly two percent in motorcycle fatalities and one more pedestrian death than 2013.
