NASHVILLE, Tenn. – While the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Constitution guarantees marriage equality to all, that doesn't mean the fight for equal rights in Tennessee is over.

Gwen Schablik, chair and president of the Tennessee Equality Project Foundation, says there is still much discrimination for the LGBT community, and that includes housing and employment.

"In the state of Tennessee, it's a fire-at-will state and somebody could get married on a Saturday and come in on a Monday morning, present their marriage certificate and a wedding photo and they could be fired,” she points out. “So that is not full equality."

Schablik says workforce protections for the LGBT community are something that lawmakers will be asked to address in next year's General Assembly.

Schablik says Tennessee must also take action to make sure that all schools are a welcoming place for all children.

"There are only three counties in the state that have actual anti-bullying (policies) regarding sexual orientation and gender identity, and there needs to be protections for all because the schools should be a safe place for children and we should be respecting everybody," she states.

Friday's decision by the Supreme Court overturns the 2006 vote in Tennessee where residents overwhelmingly approved an amendment to the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Gov. Bill Haslam says Tennessee will comply with the high court's decision and do so as quickly as possible.
