Carlson City, NV - De todo el país, Nevada es el estado con el mejor historial en cuanto a reducción de niños hispanos sin seguridad médica: 33 por ciento menos de 2013 a 2014. Así consta en el estudio llamado “Ganancias Históricas en la Cobertura de Salud para los Niños Hispanos, Durante el Primer Año de la Ley de Cuidado Asequible, Affordable Care Act”.

La investigación fue realizada por el “Georgetown Center for Children and Families” (Centro de la Universidad Georgetown para los Niños y las Familias) y el “National Counseil of La Raza” (Consejo Nacional de La Raza). Denise Tanata, de la “Children’s Advocacy Alliance” (Alianza por la Defensa de los Niños), reconoce el mérito de la expansión de Medicaid en Nevada, que cubrió a muchos de los padres de estos jóvenes.

“Se asumió que si se inscribían más adultos en Medicaid, ellos inscribirían también a sus hijos, y las cifras que vemos hoy en realidad lo confirman.”

Tanata da crédito además a los enormes esfuerzos bilingües de difusión lanzados en el estado cuando fue aprobada la Ley de Cuidado Asequible, “Affordable Care Act”, para inscribir a las familias hispanas en Medicaid.

Aún así, Sonya Schwartz, del Centro Georgetown, señala que en 2014 quedaban 36 mil niños hispanos sin seguro médico.

“Nevada tiene todavía mucho por avanzar. El estado todavía es el noveno con más niños hispanos sin seguro, pero si sigue así volverá a tener un gran avance el año que entra.”

El informe reporta que, a nivel nacional, la cantidad de niños hispanos sin seguro de salud bajó en aproximadamente 300 mil: de 2 millones en 2013, a 1.7 en 2014.
