Choose the Gas that's Best for Your Car This Summer

PORTLAND, Ore. – On the road this summer, you might want to check the type of gasoline you're putting into your vehicle.

A new American Automobile Association study says gas that meets what's known as Top Tier standards keeps engines cleaner and emissions down.

Top Tier brands contain more detergent additives, which AAA says could keep car engines in better shape over the long run.

Although Top Tier gas costs about 3 cents a gallon more, Dave Carlson, director of government and public affairs for AAA Oregon/Idaho, says the extra pennies could end up saving you money.

"We presume that that means you'd have less reason to have expensive repair work done on your engine,” he explains. “Your engine may last longer, and you may hold on to your car for many more years."

The study found 75 percent of drivers choose gas stations based on price or location. Only about 12 percent choose a gasoline based on whether it contains enhanced detergents.

Carlson says AAA hired an independent lab to test claims about Top Tier brands, which are backed by eight of the country's largest automakers.

The study tested vehicles driving more than 4,000 miles with Top Tier and non-Top Tier brands. It found cars with non-Top Tier gas caused 19 times more engine deposits than with Top Tier gas.

Carlson says another surprising result of switching is that Top Tier fuel could actually clean up your engine.

"If you switch fuels to the Top Tier grade gasoline, your system can sort of clean itself up, if you will, and get rid of some of those carbon deposits, although it can be a timely process, maybe a thousand miles additional, just to get your car cleaned up," he relates.

Carlson says the designation is usually advertised on gas pumps. You can find stations that provide Top Tier at
