SANTA FE, N.M. – 22 líderes religiosos de Nuevo México y de todo el suroeste publican hoy una carta agradeciendo al Presidente Obama y a la Secretaria del Interior, Sally Jewell, los nuevos controles impuestos a la fuga de gas metano en las perforaciones de petróleo y gas.

La Oficina de Administración de la Tierra (“Bureau of Land Management”) recientemente terminó un conjunto de normas para limitar el flameo y las fugas del potente gas de invernadero.

Joan Brown, Hermana de la Orden de San Francisco y directora ejecutiva de Poder y Luz Interreligiosos de Nuevo México (“New Mexico Interfaith Power and Light", NMIPL), dice que para la gente de fe proteger el medio ambiente es una responsabilidad moral.

“Involucra la salud de los niños y de los más vulnerables, el proteger el aire de la contaminación del petróleo y las fugas de gas.”

La carta reconoce los muchos meses de audiencias púbicas y el duro trabajo invertido para lograr acuerdos políticos, esfuerzos que lograron incluir normas que exigen a las empresas encontrar y reparar las fugas, detener la quema o el venteo del gas excedente e instalar tecnología que capte el metano.

Brown destaca que el gas ahorrado luego puede venderse en el mercado, lo que beneficia a la empresa, al estado y a la gente.

“Para nosotros en Nuevo México, como tenemos una crisis presupuestal, podría significar más regalías para el estado que también ayudarían a nuestros niños y entrarían a las escuelas.”

Los estudios muestran que el gas desperdiciado cada año representa un valor de 330 millones de dólares… y casi una tercera parte sólo en Nuevo México.
