Health Impact from TN Coal Plants Could Increase

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee has four coal-fired power plants and this week, the Environmental Protection Agency released its plan for new rules to regulate carbon pollution from plants across the country.

The proposal itself notes the changes could be harmful to public health.

The Affordable Clean Energy Rule, or ACE, sets guidelines for states to develop their own plans to target carbon emissions, and allows them to scrap the Clean Power Plan's more stringent national targets.

Molly Rauch, public health policy director for Moms Clean Air Force, says the agency's own analysis shows carbon pollution will increase, leading to 120,000 more cases of worsened asthma and 1,400 more premature deaths each year.

"There are lives on the line here,” she stresses. “And the idea that a coal company's profits are just more important than that – we are outraged as parents.

“When are our children going to be prioritized by this administration?"

The EPA says the Clean Power Plan would have been "burdensome," and its alternative would still have the net effect of reducing carbon emissions from current levels.

Almost 79,000 children in Tennessee have asthma, some of which is attributed to poor air quality.

The EPA contends the ACE Rule would empower states, promote energy independence and facilitate economic growth and job creation.

But Rauch argues it would do nothing to stop climate change.

"We're basically at a time when the impacts of climate change have never been more obvious in the form of heat waves and wildfires, and drought and the spread of disease,” she stresses. “So, this proposal represents the Trump administration literally turning its back on reality."

There's a 60-day comment period on the proposed changes, and the EPA will hold a public hearing.
