New Hampshire is the only New England state without a law on the books protecting the right to an abortion. Still, providers want Granite Staters to know abortion is safe and legal up to 24 weeks.

Neighboring states such as Maine and Vermont have taken steps to protect providers and people fleeing abortion-restrictive states to access care.

Kayla Montgomery, vice president of public affairs for Planned Parenthood Northern New England, noted the prohibition on abortions after 24 weeks passed by the current General Court is the first ban in modern history the Live Free or Die State has seen.

"All of New England, our neighboring states, all have the proactive right to have an abortion in their laws," Montgomery emphasized. "We do not have that in New Hampshire. So right now, abortion is safe and legal for up to 24 weeks, but elections truly matter because that could change if different people are elected."

Montgomery pointed to a roadmap released by her organization last week with short- and long-term solutions, such as repealing the 24-week ban, passing a proactive law guaranteeing the right to an abortion, and enshrining the right in the state constitution.

Montgomery added even though it has been just two weeks since the decision came down, patients from multiple states are already coming up to the region.

"Just in the last week, we saw patients from Louisiana and Texas, Tennessee, South Dakota," Montgomery outlined. "Because abortion is essential, and it is timely, and people need to get care, and regardless of your ZIP code, we're available for folks."

The roadmap also urged New Hampshire to start addressing geographic disparities in abortion access, supporting policies to make sure abortions are covered regardless of insurance and boosting the provider workforce.

Montgomery stressed there are also recommendations surrounding strengthening public health overall, and educating people on how to spot misinformation and disinformation.
