Premio pretende honrar trabajo de enfermeros en Illinois

Los enfermeros en Illinois han trabajado incansablemente para garantizar la mejor atención para los residentes del estado desde que comenzó la pandemia. Ahora, una organización sin fines de lucro busca honrar ese arduo trabajo.

Los premios "Compassion in Nursing" de 2022 se otorgarán a hasta tres enfermeros con licencia o asistentes de enfermería certificados que trabajen en el espacio de cuidados paliativos o cuidados de hospicio en Illinois.

Amy Sherman, del grupo Compassion & Choices, que patrocina el premio, dice que los ganadores recibirán un honorario de $500 por su trabajo.

"Realmente queremos reconocer a los héroes anónimos que están al final de la vida de tantas personas", expresó Sherman.

La fecha límite para las nominaciones es el 1 de septiembre, y se pueden autonominar o enviar el nombre de otra persona para su consideración. Sherman dice que los ganadores se anunciarán en noviembre, y Compassion & Choices alienta a las personas de poblaciones desfavorecidas y comunidades de escasos recursos a postularse.

Un informe de 2020 del Instituto Nacional de Salud encontró que "la gravedad de la pandemia de COVID-19 está provocando más desafíos de salud mental entre los enfermeros".

Sherman comenta que los enfermeros aún enfrentan un estrés tremendo por el COVID, la escasez de personal y otros desafíos.

"Queremos asegurarnos de que se reconozcan sus sacrificios y que quienes trabajan en cuidados paliativos y de hospicio sepan que nos preocupamos por ellos", aseguró la entrevistada.

Según el Instituto de Cuidados Paliativos y Hospicio en Illinois, el estado tendrá una escasez estimada de más de 14,000 enfermeros para 2025.

En un esfuerzo por abordar la disminución de los niveles de personal y el agotamiento, Illinois adoptó este mes una nueva política que aumenta los lazos de financiamiento estatal a hogares de ancianos para personal.
