Natural-gas bills are expected to increase across the U.S. this winter, including North Dakota, prompting reminders for eligible households to sign up for heating aid.

Robin Addington, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program administrator for the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services, noted applications for the federally funded initiative are now being accepted. North Dakota's share is expected to be $22 million this winter, and Addington said it definitely will come in handy.

"This year, LIHEAP will be especially important since heating costs are expected to increase substantially this heating season," Addington pointed out.

The Energy Information Administration said the Midwest is likely to see the biggest price hikes for natural gas at 27%. LIHEAP covers a portion of the enrollee's monthly bill for both homeowners and renters. Those eligible must be at or below 60% of North Dakota's median income.

Addington added if households are approved for aid, they also can qualify for other forms of assistance to help keep their energy bills lower.

"They qualify for weatherization assistance, or if they have problems with their furnace," Addington outlined.

Applicants will see the repairs and upgrades carried out by their local Community Action Agency. As for seeking approval, Addington noted the application period runs all the way through the spring. Even with higher demand expected, she anticipated North Dakota will have enough funds to cover everyone who needs it.
