The Nevada Conservation League will be busy during this legislative session.

The group said it plans to advance renewable energy and oppose ideas that would prolong the state's fossil-fuel dependency. The League noted the transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in Nevada.

Jermareon Williams, Nevada government affairs manager for Western Resource Advocates, said federal dollars are available for incentive programs to help with the transition to cleaner, electric trucks and buses. A bill is being drafted by Asm. Howard Watts, D-Las Vegas, to take advantage of the funding.

Williams argued it would lower some of the upfront costs for businesses and agencies looking to make the switch.

"The public health benefit of electrifying larger vehicles is one of the greatest impacts that this bill would have for Nevada," Williams contended. "Despite medium and heavy-duty trucks making up only 5% of the vehicles on the road nationally, they're responsible for 30% of on-road greenhouse gas emissions."

The league said Nevada spends billions of dollars to import fossil fuels from out-of-state, when it could prioritize local, cleaner forms of energy.

Christi Cabrera-Georgeson, deputy director of the Nevada Conservation League, said the group also supports funding for the Outdoor Education and Recreation Grant Program, to get more young people and lower-income families outdoors.

She noted the program has been around since 2019 but has never received state funding, which has hindered its implementation.

"By securing funding for this program, we're building the next stewards of our air, our land and our water," Cabrera-Georgeson asserted. "It's a pretty simple bill; we're just trying to get some money and get this program up and running."

The League also supports Assembly Bill 112, to construct safe wildlife crossings.

It's part of an effort to curb more than 500 reported wildlife-vehicle collisions a year, and many more that go unreported. According to the state Department of Transportation, the incidents kill more than 5,000 animals and cost the state close to $20 million a year.
