Maine Tops National Average in Higher-Ed Attainment

Maine had some of the highest increases in educational attainment between 2019 and 2021, according to a new report from Lumina Foundation.

Among adults ages 25-64, 55% gained a postsecondary degree or workforce certification, outpacing the national average of about 54%.

Jason Judd, executive director of Educate Maine, said schools are working to ensure students graduate by helping more with transportation, health care and child care.

"There's a significant increase and awareness of what adults need outside of the classroom as much as what they need inside the classroom," Judd pointed out.

Judd noted schools have also made great investments in academic and career advising, and helped ensure students have the technology and broadband service needed to complete their degree.

Affordability, however, remains an obstacle for many students. While community college in Maine is free for high school students affected by the pandemic, Gov. Janet Mills has prioritized expanding the maximum award from the Maine State Grant Program, the largest need-based grant for students.

Judd called it a game-changer.

"I can't stress how important that investment is and that particular program to support our students that are low income and coming from low income situations and families," Judd stated.

In her proposed budget, Gov. Mills increased the maximum grant award to $3,000.

If approved by the Legislature, Mills will have doubled the program's funding during her time in office, helping the state reach its goal of 60% postsecondary education attainment by 2025.

Support for this reporting was provided by Lumina Foundation.
