Georgians Head to D.C. to Rally for Student-Loan Debt Cancellation

The U.S. Supreme Court hears oral arguments next week in the two cases on student loan debt cancellation.

Groups across the country wanting at least some student debt erased plan to rally on Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court building, including some from Georgia.

The New Georgia Project Action Fund is mobilizing about 45 young borrowers of color for a bus trip from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., to attend the rally.

Maggie Bell, lead organizer for the group, said the amount of student debt eligible for cancellation in Georgia is more than $25 billion, and eliminating it would benefit millions of people in the Peach State.

"We launched the CLEAR campaign, and CLEAR stands for 'Canceling Loans for Education and Reparations.' Our demand is that the President and Congress, they take action to cancel student loan debt for Black and brown borrowers," Bell explained.

Bell added they surveyed young people across the state and found student debt cancellation is a top issue for them. More than half of Georgia college graduates carried student debt in the 2019-2020 school year, and nearly 43 million Americans have federal student-loan debt, totaling more than $1.62 trillion.

Since the Biden administration has extended the pause on student-loan repayment, many borrowers are not paying on their federal student-loan debt yet.

In the meantime, Bell noted many recent graduates are still repaying their private loans, which has been tough due to inflation.

"Based off of SCOTUS' decision, which is again February 28th, Biden announced that by June 30th, if the Supreme Court has not ruled or said anything about the hearing, then repayments will resume in 60 days," Bell pointed out. "Right now, a lot of people are, like, 'This grace period, this pause, is helpful.' "

The administration has stopped taking applications for student debt cancellation as it awaits the high court's decision. Bell added the New Georgia Project Action Fund is circulating a CLEAR Campaign petition on its website, in support of clearing all federal student loan debt for Georgians.
