Fayetteville Center Calls for Vigilance in Reporting Child Abuse

North Carolinians are being asked this month to remember their crucial duty as mandated reporters of suspected child abuse.

Last year, as a grim reminder for National Child Abuse Prevention Month, 28 children lost their lives at the hands of a parent or guardian in North Carolina and 100,000 cases of abuse or neglect were investigated. These statistics highlight why Faith Boehmer, prevention and volunteer coordinator at the Fayetteville Child Advocacy Center, has urged everyone to recognize the signs of abuse and know they have a vital role in supporting and protecting the kids in their community.

"In our community last year, we had 808 referrals sent to us during the fiscal year of 21-22," she said. "Over 500 of those had forensic interviews, here at our office."

Boehmer emphasized that these numbers represent only a fraction of the cases, as many instances of child abuse go unreported. It's estimated that one in four women and one in 13 men experienced sexual abuse as a child.

Experts have emphasized that understanding child abuse creates heightened awareness and helps people identify red flags, from a child's sudden behavioral shift to unattended injuries. Boehmer said one hurdle in addressing these cases is convincing people of the urgency of this issue in their own community.

"Sometimes people feel like it may not happen here, it may not happen to someone they know," she said. "But when we look at the numbers, one in ten children are sexually abused by their 18th birthday. That's a pretty high statistic."

For National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Child Advocacy Center is planting pinwheel gardens and providing education through regular classes and services for families affected by abuse. The North Carolina Alliance of YMCAs also has a series of articles about child abuse prevention on its website.
