Public education advocates in New Hampshire say the results of recent school board elections showed families overwhelmingly support their public schools and the communities they help create.

In most races, pro-public education candidates beat those who pushed for a "parental bill of rights," book bans or cuts to school budgets.

Sarah Robinson, education justice campaign director for the group Granite State Progress, said voters rejected divisiveness, opting for candidates who support fully-funded and inclusive schools.

"Americans, and Granite Staters in particular, understand how important that kind of community building is, and that public school offers us that opportunity," Robinson asserted.

Robinson pointed out nearly 90% of New Hampshire families send their children to public schools, and parents are successfully organizing to elect candidates who will support those schools. She pointed to the Merrimack Valley School District, where Jessica Wheeler Russell and Sally Hirsch Dickinson beat candidates from the group We the People, who ran on an anti-LGBTQ-plus platform.

Public school advocates say hate groups and other "bad actors" are disrupting school board meetings and spreading anti-transgender rhetoric.

Linds Jakows, founder of the nonprofit 603 Equality, said it has been the case in Milford, where newcomer Amy Clark Canty ran a school board campaign promoting a safe and affirming environment for all students, and won.

"I think that's a real referendum on the anti-trans agenda, and I'm really excited to see what they're going to be able to do for students in Milford," Jakows remarked.

Jakows commended parents who are supporting transgender kids, including a group of moms in Derry who successfully lobbied local businesses to take down an anti-trans billboard near a shopping center, and are now active in local and state races themselves.
